Last weekend we took the core of our youth leadership team to the annual NCN “Leaders Congress” put on by Student Ministries Director Abe Daniel & the NorCal/Nevada Assembly of God Student Ministries network!
Not only was it a great opportunity to get away & see the beautiful rolling hills of the San Jose area, but it was also a power packed weekend of connecting with new people & receiving fresh vision & equipping from some of the nations premier Pastors, Youth Pastors & Ministry Leaders!
One of the break-out sessions I attended was called “Building Disciple’s & not just Attendees” taught by veteran Youth Pastor & leadership coach – Kevin Moore. I came away from this session inspired & renewed with fresh vision for youth ministry! Below are my notes…
BUILDING DISCIPLES AND NOT JUST ATTENDEES
If you don’t define the win, you will never know if you hit the goal.
The win for me is to bring the lost to Jesus & to help Christians live like Him.
2 STEPS TO BEGIN BUILDING DISCIPLES
1. Live like Jesus
You can teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are.
Discipleship has to be important to you personally! Therefore, you need to live like Jesus & seek Him with all of your heart!
2. Get a game-plan
Q What does a disciple look like?
A Someone who loves Jesus & serves Jesus
4 KEYS TO BUILDING DISCIPLES AND NOT JUST ATTENDEES
1 Make Your Big Program Magnetic
If an old Youth Pastor likes the youth service, then there is probably a problem!
Teenagers love to have fun – so make your main program/service fun & attractive!
Give them physical reasons to come & they will also get the spiritual.
Q What would the star linebacker on the High School football team think if he came to your youth service?
A What he would think is probably a good measuring stick for if your program/service is magnetic enough to reach today’s youth culture.
2 Next Steps
After students come to Christ, help them to take the “Next Steps” in their faith by teaching them about…
1 Salvation (What they just experienced)
2 Water Baptism
3 Reading the Bible & Prayer
4 Overcoming temptation
These next steps can be taught in a class, small group or even online.
3 Connect Groups
Connect teenagers with God by connecting them with others! Students who are connected in small groups will overwhelmingly attend your weekly youth service, but those who are not building relationships in connect groups will eventually go out the back door of your ministry & never return…
Kevin’s Connect groups meet on Sunday nights from 6-8pm
4 Serving Opportunities
Give students a chance to serve! It’s not your job to do the work, it’s your job to equip them to do the work.
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” 2 Timothy 2:1-2
Paul equipped Timothy = Timothy equipped reliable people = Reliable people equipped others. Equip your leaders to equip your students to serve!
